An extract from The Kybalion, “To destroy an undesirable rate of mental vibration, put into operation the Principle of Polarity and concentrate upon the opposite pole to that which you desire to suppress. Kill out the undesirable by changing its polarity.”
I was led to revisit The Kybalion as I was contemplating some notes from a recent study session.
The above extract reflected the insightful and helpful body of work within the Abhidhamma, Buddhic psychology.
Not familiar with this? Very worthwhile to get acquainted with it. The text I have used with students is, The Psychological Attitude of Early Buddhist Philosophy by Lama Anagarika Govinda. There is a useful chart summarizing the 52 Mental Factors of Consciousness. Your effort to translate the chart from Pali into English and learn as you go, has potential to bear good fruit when put into practice.
Have questions or comments, would love to hear from you.
The principle of polarity talks about how things may seem opposite and opposing but what grabs me is how the exist on the same continuum/wavelength. So seeing one side only is not seeing the whole picture. Everything is identical in nature but different in degree. So true.
